When John Spicer was granted an inn licence in 1862, it was the start of a business that continues to this day, as the Elizabeth Town Bakery Cafe.

At the age of 22, John Spicer was transported from England to Van Diemens Land for 15 years for highway robbery.

By the time he was 38 he had a thriving saddlery and harnessmaking business in Launceston, was married and had a family.
